Insurance companies have been cutting agent compensation for the last decade.  To compensate for the lost revenue many agents are turning to charging fees to customers.  These fees are in addition to the premiums paid by customers and are in addition to the commissions paid by the insurance companies to the agents.  This money goes directly into the pocket of the agent or agency writing your policy.  It serves no purpose other than to compensate the agent.

The Bureau of Insurance is concerned about fees and they do regulate agents in how these fees are applied.  They must be applied consistently and there are no exceptions.  A "Fee Schedule" must be posted in the office and should be given to every customer.  If the agent charges a fee to one customer for a particular product or service then they must charge the fee to all customers.  Most agents who do charge fees charge a flat "Application Fee" that can range from $50 to $300.  Higher fees are charged to Commercial Clients for products like Workers Compensation.  Some agents will charge a fee for almost any transaction including making changes to your policy.  I have even heard of agents who charge transaction fees to customers who pay their policy premiums in their offices!

These fees are unnecessary and are not standard in the industry.  If you are being charged a fee to buy insurance or to receive servcie on your insurance policy, you may want to consider finding a new agent.  It just so happens that I know an agent who does not charge any fees for any products!  That's right, Griffin-Owens Insurance does not charge customers fees for applications, changes or any other insurance related transaction.  So, if you are paying more than you think you should for insurance take a look at what you are paying in fees.  Then give us a call.  We can probably save you money and provide you with better service and better products than you have now.
