Protecting your family’s most valuable asset from a damaging earthquake requires the purchase of earthquake insurance. Homeowners Insurance typically will not protect you from an earthquake unless it is properly endorsed. Adding the coverage to your homeowners policy will cost between 20% and 30% of your current annual premium. The policy pays minus your deductible. Deductibles under the earthquake endorsement are 2% of the coverage limit. For example:
If your home has a $500,000 Dwelling limit and is damaged by an earthquake you will have to pay the first $10,000 toward the repair.
$500,000 x 2% = $10,000
